See the Updated Resource List for a list of resources that can be used to make up an exam.
The AEM/CEM exam has 120 multiple-choice questions. One hundred of these questions will be scored. IAEM will determine exam results using scaled scoring. Scaled scoring is a representation of the total number of correct answers an applicant has provided that has been converted into a standardized scale. The passing score is 500 on a scale of 200 to 800. Examinees will be allowed 2.5 hours for the exam.
The exam includes a portion of questions that are considered to be universal, core content for emergency management regardless of location. Additional content is tested depending on the country in which the applicant is based. The Exam Blueprint outlines the domains and subject weights to help applicants prepare for the exam.
Applicants who are ready to schedule an individual exam should complete the exam request form giving the proctor's complete contact information, date of the exam, and 14 business day’s notice.
The IAEM website has a listing of official preparatory course and/or exam offerings that have been arranged through IAEM. As more official offerings are finalized they will be added to the webpage.
Group exam offerings may be arranged by contacting IAEM staff member Albon Yowell at Albon@iaem.com.
Applicants that fail the exam may retake one additional time at no additional charge after a wait period of 60 days of receiving the notification of failure. The retake exam date must allow for at least 14 business days (per United States holiday schedule) from the submission of the retake request for IAEM to process the request.
Applicants have an unlimited time to do a retest with one exception. If the applicant has an approved application in the Certification Portal, they have 1 year from the time that application was approved to have a passing exam. Remember, IAEM updates the exams as needed, so there may be significant content changes between exam attempts. IAEM announces new versions of the exam 60-90 days prior to their release.
Applicants that fail the exam twice must repay the certification fee to receive two more opportunities to take the exam following the retest policy. There is no maximum number of attempts, based on the 2 test per paid certification fee, though applicants are strongly encouraged to be intentional in their remediation efforts.
The preparatory course includes: An overview of the AEM/CEM exam; the standards upon which the exam is based; sample exam questions; and a Q&A period.
