Emergency management started at Arkansas Tech in 1997, and was one of the first bachelor's degree programs in the country in this discipline. In 2004, a grant was received for developing an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on campus, which opened in 2005 as one of only a few EOCs on college campuses. Also in 2005, the EM program became a department at Arkansas Tech. A master's degree program began in 2006. The Department of Emergency Administration and Management offers bachelor of science and master of science degrees in emergency management and homeland security.
