Announcing Symposium Keynote Speaker: Dr. Jeannette Sutton

Sutton-6

Jeannette Sutton, PhD, is an internationally recognized scholar of alerts and warnings, identified by Stanford University as being among the top 2% of scientists worldwide in 2024 and 2025. With funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the US Geological Survey, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, she has studied, taught, and written about risk communication, alerts, and warnings for more than two decades.

With more than 75 publications, her research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Risk Analysis, Information, Communication, and Society; Health Communication; and the International Journal of Disaster Risk Research, the Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, and Natural Hazards Review.  To bring her research to practitioners, she also writes for industry publications such as The Journal of the National Fire Prevention Association and The Call, a magazine of the National Emergency Numbers Association.

She works as an Associate Professor at the University at Albany. In 2023, Sutton launched The Warn Room to bring evidence-based research to practitioners by translating the science into practice. In this capacity, she conducts audits of historical alert and warning messages and reviews templates designed for future communication.  Most recently, she became a co-host of The Alerting Authority; the only podcast focused entirely on alerts and warnings.
